The Pakistani military stated that since the Taliban took over Kabul, at least two soldiers were killed in the first such attack.
The military stated that two Pakistani soldiers were killed in gunfire from the Afghan border. This was the first such attack since the Taliban took over Kabul 10 days ago.
The military stated that it retaliated and killed two or three attackers. This statement cannot be verified because the tribal areas along the Afghan border are restricted areas for journalists and human rights organizations. The incident in Pakistan’s Bajaur area on Sunday was the first report of such an incident since the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15.
Bajaur is one of several lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border. These areas have long sheltered combatants, including the Pakistani Taliban, or TTP for short.
After the fall of Kabul, TTP renewed its allegiance to the Taliban in Afghanistan and recently stepped up its attack on the Pakistani army.
The military did not specify which organization it believes was responsible for Sunday’s attack, but it has long believed that TTP leaders and fighters are taking refuge in Afghanistan after fleeing tribal areas during military operations against armed groups.
The military said in a statement: “According to intelligence reports, 2-3 terrorists were killed and 3-4 terrorists were injured due to the Pakistani army’s open fire.”
The statement condemned “terrorists using Afghan land to engage in activities against Pakistan, and hopes that Afghanistan’s existing and future institutions will not allow such activities against Pakistan.”
Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed stated that Islamabad hopes that the Taliban will ensure that anti-Pakistan TTPs will not use Afghan territory as a launch pad for attacks in Pakistan.
Islamabad accused the Pakistani Taliban of using Afghanistan as a base to launch a suicide attack in northern Pakistan in July, killing 9 Chinese workers and 4 Pakistanis.
Pakistani military spokesman Major General Babar Iftihar said at a press conference on Friday: “We anticipate the development of the situation in Afghanistan, and violence may spread to Pakistan.”
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Muhaid stated at his first press conference that the Taliban will not allow any organization to use Afghan territory to launch attacks on anyone.
