This young man is the founder and CEO of the Resilient Together initiative, which has thousands of members in five countries
An Emirati student was named the top 10 finalist of Chegg.org’s 2021 Global Student Awards – a prize of $100,000 will be awarded to an outstanding student who has a real impact on learning, the lives of peers and other society.
Lamya Butt, a 17-year-old Pakistani expat and student of Dubai Scholars Private School, stood out from more than 3,500 nominations and applications from 94 countries/regions around the world.
Lamya is the first youth consultant from the UAE for the United Nations Foundation Girls Action Plan and leaders of the Middle East and North Africa region. Her role is to empower girls by focusing on topics such as girls’ education, gender-based violence and breast cancer awareness.
She is also the founder and CEO of Resilient Together, a youth initiative that works with international charitable organizations to provide ICT equipment to 20,000 UAE students forced to undergo distance learning due to Covid-this work has received international coverage and attention.
Resilient Together has thousands of young members and has expanded to establish chapters in five countries (the UAE, the United States, Poland, Mexico, and Pakistan), where it offers online courses on coding, debate, public speaking, photography, and other skills.
At the school, Lamya represented more than 1,600 students as the female principal; she also helped tutor students in mathematics and economics, and founded the school’s newspaper. She also organized and managed Dubai Scholars’ largest inter-school model United Nations, with more than 140 representatives from more than 20 schools in the UAE.
In an interview with Khaleej Times, Lamya said that winning the Global Student Award means she will be able to fund her university studies and expand Resilient Together to podcast and video platforms.
“I plan to study law, economics or political science in university, and continue my charity work to improve others and contribute to society. My dream is to do my best in this world, through knowledge sharing, to safeguard humanity Values ​​and make meaningful contributions to make it more equal,” she said when asked about her future plans.
‘Guard tomorrow’
The Varkey Foundation launched the Chegg.org Global Student Award earlier this year, which is a sister award to its US$1 million Global Teacher Award. It aims to create a powerful new platform that highlights the efforts of outstanding students from all over the world. The world reshapes the world for the better.
This award is open to all students who are over 16 years old and enrolled in academic institutions or training and skills programs. Part-time students and students enrolled in online courses are also eligible for this award.
