Khalida Jarrar, the 58-year-old Palestinian political and civil society leader, was released after serving nearly two years in an Israeli prison.

On Sunday afternoon, Israeli authorities released Jalal, a left-wing figure and now defunct member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), at the Salem checkpoint west of Jenin City.

“They forbid me to attend the funeral of my beloved daughter, and they forbid me to kiss my daughter’s forehead,” Jarrar said from the cemetery.

“They rejected my farewell,” she added before bursting into tears. “The last time I embraced Suha was on the night I was arrested in 2019.”

A senior leader of the PFLP said that although “this is a very painful time and words cannot express deep sorrow, we are very happy that Jarrar is free from the occupied prison”.

Jarrar was again in administrative detention until March of this year when the Israeli military court accused her of “belonging to an illegal organization” because she was associated with PFLP. She was previously imprisoned on this charge.

Addameer Prisoners’ Rights Organization in Ramallah Said At that time “all [her] Such detentions and arrests are flagrant violations of international law, violations of internationally recognized legal principles and the prohibition of two trials of a person for the same act”.

Because of their political affiliation or any peaceful activities, it often uses “membership of an illegal organization” or “serving someone” as an excuse to sentence many Palestinians.

Because of her outspoken character and political radicalism, Jalal has long been a target of Israeli occupation.

For most of the past six years, she has been in and out of Israeli prisons, including administrative detention between July 2017 and February 2019. This is an Israeli policy that allows Palestinians to be imprisoned indefinitely, according to “Secret information” without filing formal charges against them or allowing them to stand trial.

In 2015, she was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for the same crime-“member of an illegal organization”.

Since 1988, Israeli authorities have banned her from travelling, except for a three-week treatment in Amman, Jordan.

Jarrar was elected as a member of the PLC on the PFLP list in 2006. She has also been appointed to the Palestinian National Committee for the follow-up with the International Criminal Court.
