Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian suspected of stabbing in Jerusalem on Saturday, with Palestinian officials saying the teenager was seriously wounded.
It was the latest in a wave of deadly violence in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank since the spring, making this year the deadliest since 2015.
Police said Palestinians seriously injured an Israeli pedestrian before fleeing to a block near East Jerusalem.
When he turned to an officer with an “object” in his hand, police identified the attacker and shot him, they said.
The statement did not say how police identified him, what items he was holding or how close he was to police.
The official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the suspect, 16, was seriously wounded by Israeli gunfire.
It did not provide his name or further details. Israeli medics took him to a hospital in Jerusalem.
Separately, a 32-year-old man died in hospital after being shot by an Israeli gun near a checkpoint in the northern West Bank on Saturday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
Palestinian attackers have carried out a series of stabbings, shootings and car ramming attacks in East Jerusalem and the West Bank in recent years. While Israel says it only uses lethal force in life-threatening situations, Palestinians and human rights groups have accused Israeli security forces of using excessive force and, in some cases, killing people who were not involved in the violence.
Violence escalated in the spring as Israel stepped up nighttime raids in the occupied West Bank to hunt down suspects involved in the latest attack.
Raids often spark deadly clashes between the army and the Palestinians.
More than 125 Palestinians have been killed in Palestinian-Israeli fighting in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year.
The fighting has escalated since a series of Palestinian attacks in Israel killed 19 people.
The Israeli army said most of the Palestinians killed were militants. But stone-throwing youths protesting the invasion and others not involved in the confrontation were also killed.
Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war and built more than 130 settlements there, many of which resemble small towns with apartment buildings, shopping malls and industrial areas.
Palestinians want the West Bank to be a major part of their future state.
Most countries consider the settlements to violate international law.
