Pentagon ‘investigating’ reports of Russian missiles hitting Poland | World News

[ad_1]

The Pentagon said on Tuesday it could not confirm media reports that two Russian missiles had landed in NATO member Poland, but added that it was investigating the claims.

“We are aware of media reports that two Russian missiles struck a site within the Polish or Ukrainian border,” Pentagon spokesman Pat Ride said.

“We don’t have any information at this time to confirm that a missile attack occurred,” Ryder told reporters, adding that the Pentagon was “investigating the matter further.”

Poland shares a border with Ukraine, which Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded on February 24, and hosts thousands of Ukrainian refugees displaced by the fighting.

Moscow hit Ukrainian cities with missiles on Tuesday, throwing seven million homes into darkness and dampening joy at Russia’s humiliating retreat from the city of Kherson.

It was unclear whether the missiles that likely hit Poland were part of the same wave.

According to official government sources, about 10,000 U.S. personnel rotate in Poland, which is a regular contributor to NATO missions.

Ryder said the protection of the troops would be taken “very seriously”.

“We are very confident in whatever force protection measures we have in place, whether in Poland or elsewhere,” he said.

“But again, we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves here. We’re going to get the facts. And then when we have more to offer, we will.”
