Sergei Perelygin and Lindsay Webster crowned World of Sparta after conquering a brand new track in the Al Wathba desert, beating the best obstacle racers in the world champion.

The event is organized in partnership with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Spartan, the world’s leading endurance sports and extreme fitness brand.

At the Al Wathba Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, international athletes from more than 80 countries battle it out for the Men’s and Women’s Individual World Super Championships with more than $125,000 in prize money – the event’s second Hosted outside the United States of America.

The first day of the two-day festival saw intense competition, with elite athletes from both categories overcoming some challenging obstacles, including the A-Frame Cargo, Atlas Carry and Ape Hanger.

Perelygin finished an impressive second at last year’s event, finishing the 10km in 1:3:47 to win the 2022 Men’s Elite World Championships. Perelygin beat his rival Ryan Atkins by 0.12 seconds in 1 hour 3 minutes 59 seconds.

“Since my first competition in 2015, I’ve dreamed of becoming the Spartan World Champion,” Perelygin said.

“I’m very happy because it’s only my second world title, it was difficult to compete with Ryan Atkins last year, he influenced me as much as I influenced him. He finished last year but this year It’s my turn. If you believe in your dream, it will happen.”

In the women’s category, Canadian Lindsay Webster won in 1:12:49 to claim her fourth Spartan world title, while Slovakian and European Spartan champion Ezster Hortobàgyiovà was second in 1 hour. 14 minutes and 52 seconds.

“This year’s race feels a lot shorter and I think the terrain will be just as tough, but it’s easy enough,” Webster said.

“I’m just relieved, it’s a big trigger for this event, so it’s a great feeling to be out there. We’re so happy to be back in Abu Dhabi, they’ve totally spoiled the athletes here and take great care of you.”

Suhail Abdulla Alareefi, Executive Director of Events at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “This is the second year that Abu Dhabi hosts the Spartan World Championships and we are very proud of the wide participation of male and female players, which was a very high turnout. Having a district host such a well-known brand furthers our efforts to encourage the community to get fit and participate in events like Sparta.

“It is very exciting to be back in Abu Dhabi for this year’s Spartan World Championships and to join this growing community,” said Spartan CEO and Founder Jod Sena. Suhail Abdulla Alareefi, Executive Director, Events, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Joe De Sena, CEO and Founder of Spartan, presented the winners and runners-up in each category.

In addition to these two elite events, the event also showcases the Age Group World Championships, where the winners of ten age groups (14 to 60+) are crowned champions. Elsewhere, participants and spectators enjoyed a host of live events, including food trucks and a partnership with Myzone, which gave racegoers the chance to pick up their own heart rate monitors to analyze their heart rates throughout the weekend.
