Peruvian president replaces prime minister amid cabinet reshuffle

[ad_1]

LIMA (Reuters) – Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who said she is leading a transitional government after her predecessor was ousted, said on Sunday she would replace the prime minister as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

Boluarte served as vice president until earlier this month, when her predecessor, former President Pedro Castillo, was removed from office and detained for trying to illegally dissolve Congress.

Boluarte’s government has been rocked by political unrest and widespread protests that have killed 20 people since assuming a new post, authorities said, while six others were killed following incidents related to road blockades.

Boluarte told US television news program “Cuarto Poder” that cabinet changes would take place on Monday and Tuesday. The reshuffle follows the resignation of her education and culture ministers, both of whom died during the protests.

Boluarte told a news conference on Saturday that the move was motivated by the need “to be able to appoint knowledgeable ministers in each department”.

She gave no hint that she might succeed Pedro Angulo, who had just been prime minister for a week.
