Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that he will not run for vice president in 2022 and will withdraw from politics, which may pave the way for his daughter to run for the highest office in the country.
Duterte said: “The overwhelming feeling of the Filipinos is that I am not qualified. To bypass the law and the spirit of the Constitution will violate the Constitution” and run for Vice President.
“Today I announced my withdrawal from politics.”
Opinion polls show that Duterte’s popularity is almost as popular as when he won a big victory in 2016 when he promised to get rid of the drug country, but the Constitution prohibits seeking re-election.
The authoritarian instigator announced in August that he would run for vice president in the next election-critics said the move was a smokescreen, motivated by fear of facing criminal charges after leaving office.
Duterte announced the unexpected news at the place where he was originally scheduled to register for the election. He did not specify when he would leave politics.
The hard-speaking leader has yet to announce his preferred successor, but many people expect his daughter Sara to remain in the lead in recent polls.
She may protect Duterte from criminal charges in the Philippines. The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is investigating his deadly drug war, which human rights organizations estimate has caused tens of thousands of deaths.
But the mayor of the southern city of Davao City-the position her father held before becoming president-has stated that if Duterte seeks the vice-presidential position, she will not run for the election.
