NEW YORK (September 25): Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, after wrapping up a four-day working visit to New York, said on Sunday (September 25). 25 September) to depart for the UAE General Assembly (United Nations General Assembly).

He arrived here on Thursday (September 22) to join other world leaders from more than 150 countries for the 77th session of the General Assembly.

Ismail Sabri delivered the country’s national statement at the UN General Assembly on Friday, speaking in Malay – the first time a Malaysian leader has addressed the UN General Assembly. He touched on a variety of international issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, Myanmar and Palestine, as well as food security and climate change.

He also proposed an international monetary cooperation mechanism amid rising global inflation.

This is the second time Ismail Sabri has addressed the UN General Assembly. He almost read out the country’s national statement at the 76th session last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the General Assembly, Ismail Sabri met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

He also hosted a “Keluarga Malaysia” (Malaysian Family) dinner for the Malaysian diaspora in the United States.

The second part of Ismail Sabri’s overseas working visit is a four-day visit to the UAE from 26 to 29 September.

He is due to meet UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday (September 26) at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders since Sheikh Mohammed was appointed as the UAE’s new president on May 14.

The agenda for the talks between the two leaders will focus on exploring potential areas to further strengthen the long-term and multifaceted cooperation between Malaysia and the UAE.

Ismail Sabri will also visit Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to study potential cooperation between ADNOC and Petroliam Nasional Bhd in oil and gas and renewable energy.

In 2021, the UAE is Malaysia’s largest trading partner, second largest export destination and second largest source of imports.

In 2021, Malaysia’s total trade with the UAE will increase by 7.9% to RM22.29 billion (US$5.38 billion) from RM20.65 billion (US$4.93 billion) in 2020.
