POCSO accused flees to Abu Dhabi, Kerala police arrest him with Interpol help

In a rare case, a team of Kerala police has sought the help of Interpol (the International Criminal Police Organization) to seize a POCSO case from Abu Dhabi.

Navayikkulam native Febin, 26, was detained on charges of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl.

While Interpol red notices are usually issued to bring fugitives to justice for multiple crimes, including economic crimes and murder charges, Kerala police are known to seldom serve in POCSO (Protecting Children From Sexuality) crime) cases.

“But in this case, how can we let the accused escape,” Thiruvananthapuram Rural DCRB DySP P Viju Kumar said. The three-person team he led also included Pallikkal SHO VK Sreejesh and the crime division SI Santosh, who arrested Febin from Abu Dhabi.

Police said the incident related to the case occurred in 2018, and although the survivor’s family failed to report the case on time, the defendant had fled.

“We cannot record the arrest because the accused did not return to India. Former Pallikkal CI Sreejith volunteered to work for the Red Horn Notice,” DySP Viju Kumar said.

The process was enabled through the CBI and was approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Kerala Police had no direct access to Interpol.

The accused has now been remanded in custody.
