JOHOR BARU: Police arrested four foreigners and 59 locals for drug use at an entertainment complex near the city center.
Johor police chief Datuk Kamaru Zaman Mamat said all 63 people were arrested when the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) raided the premises at 2am on Saturday (Nov 12).
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the premises had been operating beyond the permitted operating hours (12am).
“In order to attract more customers, the owners also organised a lucky draw to sell tickets at RM60 each through their social media pages,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 13).
Police then checked 567 people gathering at the venue and found 62 had tested positive for drugs.
“They consisted of 43 men and 19 women, ranging in age from 16 to 58.”
“We also arrested a 32-year-old woman who identified herself as a property manager,” he said, adding that all suspects are currently being remanded to assist in the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use, which carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine not exceeding RM5,000.
Under Section 11(2) of the Johor Entertainment Places Act, the company was investigated for operating an entertainment centre for extended periods of time and was fined not more than RM50,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both.
