Police investigating a burglary have found a mummified body in the bathroom of a home in northwest Arizona.
Bullhead police said officers were called to the house about 3:30 a.m. Saturday and found Christine Lee Walters, 65, rummaging through its contents.
Police said there were signs of prying on the door indicating a break-in, and Walters was charged with entering the house for several days and taking clothes, purses and other items she allegedly intended to sell online.
When police searched the house, they found the body in a natural mummified state – which happens when a body is exposed to very dry conditions that slow down decomposition.
Walters is said to have told police she did not know the body was in the house.
Neighbors told police they thought the house was empty – they thought the owners had moved out because they hadn’t seen them in about a year.
The Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office is trying to determine the cause of death.
Detectives allegedly found the homeowner’s birth certificate, credit card, driver’s license and income tax documents during a search of Walters’ home and vehicle.
She was arrested on two counts of theft.
Police said they were seeking additional charges after methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found on her.
