Poll ends in unpredictable elections in Germany | Election News

[ad_1]

Export opinion polls show that Merkel’s Christian Democrats and rival Social Democrats go hand in hand.

The German polls ended one of the most unpredictable elections in recent history, with Angela Merkel’s conservatives and center-left Social Democrats vying for her throne as she prepares to leave the political arena.

On Sunday, tens of millions of voters went to polling stations to determine the country’s next government and the prime minister who will lead that government.

The voting ended at 16:00 GMT, and the exit poll showed fierce competition between Merkel’s Christian Democrats and rival Social Democrats.

This election is the first time Merkel has not run as a candidate since the county was reunified in 1990.

Armin Laschet of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) are leading the race to replace Merkel as the country’s next prime minister , Because she plans to step down after 16 years in power.

The initial predictions put Lashet’s conservative group behind the Social Democrats. The CDU/CSU group won 25% of the vote, which was their weakest result in the post-war federal election.

“The Social Democratic Party has the power to govern. We want Olaf Scholz to be Prime Minister,” said Lars Klingbeil, Secretary-General of the Social Democratic Party, shortly after the first exit poll.

Raschelt said his party cannot be satisfied with the election results, but he will do everything possible to establish a conservative-led government.

“We can’t be satisfied with the results of the election,” Raschelt told his supporters.

“We will do everything possible to build a conservative-led government, because the Germans now need a future alliance to modernize our country,” he said. “This may be the first time we have a government with three partners.”

Sandra Plummer, a political researcher at the North Rhine-Westphalia School of Governance in Duisburg, told Al Jazeera that the Social Democratic Party “is currently in a leading position, even though the polls may still change at night.”

“So chance [of Scholz becoming chancellor] It’s fine now,” Plümer said.

“But now it also depends on who asks for government authorization and who ultimately leads the alliance.”

A strict result will mean that the Social Democratic Party or the CDU can lead a ruling coalition.

Plummer said: “It has happened three times in German history. The party with the most votes did not provide a prime minister-so we have to wait and see.”

The slight gap shows that under the German dual voting system, the distribution of seats in the Bundestag will be very close, and voters can choose individual candidates and political parties at the same time.

Given the predictions of the export polls, the formation of the next coalition government for Europe’s largest economy may be a long and complicated process. Merkel will continue to be the caretaker leader until the new government is in place.

The electoral system usually produces a coalition government, but after World War II, Germany has never seen a winning party get less than 31% of the votes-or the coalition group scores less than this percentage.

The environmentalist Green Party is expected to make a historic breakthrough, winning 15% of the vote and becoming the third largest political group in the parliament.
