Pompano Beach's unexplored Old Town is back with more entertainment

Old Town Untapped returns this October with a packed schedule and lots of treats for art lovers of all kinds!

On the first Friday of every month, Old Town Pompano Beach becomes a hub for art, food and live music. As always, this popular event includes live bands, DJs, food trucks, craft vendors, and gallery tours at the Bailey Center for Contemporary Art (BaCA).

But now, there are more experiences to choose from, including previews of special events, participatory workshops, and the chance to meet the Artist of the Month in BaCA’s new Artist-in-Residence program. This October’s event will also unveil a celebratory new mural inside BaCA. The undeveloped old town is open to the public free of charge. Mural Unveiled:

Be the first to see the vibrant new mural in the BaCA stairwell! To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the site (former Bailey Hotel, now BaCA), the city commissioned a vibrant mural featuring overlapping narratives and an extensive historical timeline that tells the story of the past and the present. Covering approximately 343 square feet, this stunning new work by artist ‘Andrew Reid SHE’d’ will encourage visitors to visit the center’s second floor, home to the new resident artist.

Live Band: Funkin’ Grateful

Based in South Florida, Funkin’ Grateful is made up of musical veterans from the Jam world. This rock group provides a unique improvisation of the Grateful Dead’s music and incorporates other funky dance-oriented covers for a high-energy performance on every stage. Members from The Heavy Pets, Unlimited Devotion, Fusik and The Ricca Project include Joe Falconeri (bass), Al Zilinsky (guitar and vocals), Jesse Ricca (guitar and vocals), Jim Wuest (keyboards and vocals) and Jamie Newitt (drums and vocals). It’s not uncommon for guests to sit in, so keep an eye out for your favorite jammers!

Solo Exhibition Opening: Apparitions: J. Frederic May’s Eye See You Postcard

This provocative set of images showcases the extraordinary vision of artist and photographer J. Fredric May, who is legally blind and subject to vivid visual hallucinations that allow him to explore through a unique and haunting prism familiar things. The artist turns tragic events into inspiration for experimental new art forms, inviting viewers to see the world through his eyes. After suffering a stroke during heart surgery, his award-winning career as a photojournalist and commercial photographer ended, but his creative abilities took him to another level.

BaCA AiR Guest Artist: Leonardo Montoya

Leonardo Montoya is an internationally acclaimed artist known for depicting people’s uniqueness so viewers can connect, embrace and embrace diversity. He empowers the characters he depicts, highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of each, giving a voice to the often overlooked warriors of everyday life. Born in Colombia, Montoya has recently returned from the UAE, where he resides in RAK, UAE with the Al Qasimi Foundation. For his BaCA residency, he hopes to expand the scale of his artwork and take his career to the next level.

Dance: Baila Pompano Preview at Poppin’ Events

Led by renowned Latin dancer and instructor Alex Bezianis, this lively preview will give you a taste of what’s new in Pompano’s latest participatory dance series. The show, which includes salsa, bahata and other Latin dances, will be held quarterly at the Pompano Beach Arts Center starting October 21, 2022, with future events on February, May 2023 held in September and September. Each event will include a one-hour dance lesson with a live eight-piece band, DJ and professional dancers.

Create your own version of beautiful colorful masks to honor loved ones and maintain spiritual intimacy. El Díade los Muertos is a festival in Mexico where families welcome the souls of deceased loved ones back, acknowledge the symbiotic relationship between life and death, and have a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration.

The mission of the Department of Cultural Affairs is to provide cultural programming, including visual arts, digital media, music, film, theater, dance, and public art, to empower residents and residents of Pompano Beach, Broward County and the Great South. Visitors enjoy and enrich the Florida area. The department plans and manages the city’s premier cultural arts venues, including the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, the Ali Cultural Arts Center, the Bailey Center for Contemporary Art, and the Blanche Ely House Museum. The department also oversees the city’s public art program and the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts, Our Town, grants to the Pompano Beach Crossroads Placemaking Arts Initiative.
