Pope Francis will need to spend “several days” in hospital for a respiratory infection, the Vatican said.

Spokesman Matteo Bruni said the 86-year-old had complained of difficulty breathing in recent days and had gone to Rome’s Gemelli hospital for tests.

pope He added that he did not have COVID but needed several days of treatment.

“Tests revealed a respiratory infection (excluding COVID-19 infection) requiring several days of medication,” a statement said.

“Pope Francis was moved by the many messages received and expressed his gratitude for the closeness and prayers.”

The news came hours after the pope was taken to hospital for tests.

The Vatican initially said a check had been arranged, but Italian media disputed that, saying a televised interview with the pope this afternoon was canceled at the last minute.

Earlier Wednesday, the pope appeared in good health for his weekly general audience at the Vatican.

However, he grimaced while getting in and out of the “pope’s car.”

Pope Francis will celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend ahead of the Vatican’s Holy Week celebrations: Holy Thursday; Good Friday; Easter Vigil; and Easter Sunday, April 9.

America president joe biden He said he had been made aware of Pope Francis’ health problems and expressed his concern for his dear “friend”.

Pope Francis, who had a lung removed for a respiratory infection as a young man, often speaks in a low voice.

In 2021, he spent 10 days at Gemelli Hospital when he underwent surgery for a stricture of the bowel that removed 33 centimeters (13 inches) of his colon.

The pope has been using a wheelchair for more than a year due to a strained ligament in his right knee and a small fracture in his knee. He said the injury is healing and he’s been walking more on crutches lately.

Pope Francis says he is refusing surgery for a knee problem because he did not respond well to general anesthesia for bowel surgery in 2021.
