Populist anti-immigration leader claims victory in Swedish election World News

A coalition of right-wing parties has declared victory in Sweden’s elections, ousting the centre-left bloc from power.

Jimmy Akerson, who leads the nationalist and anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, said his party would be a “constructive and driving force” in rebuilding the country’s security, adding that it was “time to put Sweden first”.

Populist groups of the Sweden Democrats, Moderates, Christian Democrats and Liberals appear to have won a small majority, with most votes now being counted – with 176 seats in parliament compared to 173 for centre-left groups.

But while Mr Akesson’s party appears to have the lion’s share of the vote with 20.6%, it will be the moderate Ulf Kristersson who will lead the new government as coalition partners will not back the Sweden Democrats leader as his party is extremely Right wing root.

Mr Christerson, whose party appeared to have 19.1 per cent of the vote, said: “I will now begin to form a new government that will get the job done, a government that serves all Sweden and all citizens.”

Current Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson has embraced defeat, saying “preliminary results are sufficient to conclude” that she has lost power.

But she said she understood concerns about a victory for the front fringe party, adding: “I understand your concerns and I agree.”

Ms Anderson will become Sweden’s first female prime minister in 2021 and lead the country to NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

She said: “Four right-wing parties appear to have received less than 50 per cent of the vote in the election, and in Parliament they have a mandate or two. A slim majority, but it is a majority.

“So tomorrow I will ask for my removal as prime minister, and the responsibility for continuing the process will now pass to the Speaker of Parliament and Parliament.”
