The mission of the Porto and Northern Portugal Tourism Board is to allow the best Gondomar goldsmiths to participate in the UAE Expo 2020. Gondomar can traditionally see the historical craftsmanship of jewelry making. Another attraction will be an exhibition of filigree corsets designed in collaboration with stylist Micaela Oliveira and a new generation of filigree artists representing young Arlindo Moura.
Since the 18th century, the city has been an important production center for goldsmiths, and demand continues to grow due to an extraordinary professional labor force specializing in the production of jewellery and filigree products. In order to protect the traditional craftsmanship and unique expertise, after generations of dedicated men and women who are proficient in the art and design of exquisite filigree works, the city council decided to bring this craft to the 2020 World Expo to increase the international reputation of this tradition.
Marco Martins, Mayor of Gondomar, commented: “Gondomar is proud to bring Filigree to Dubai”. Tourist town councillor Sandra Almeida added: “We have put a lot of effort into protecting our intangible heritage. Expo 2020 Dubai is a world exhibition where millions of tourists will explore Portugal, northern Portugal, Gondomar, handicraft filigree and our filigree route”.
Francisca Guedes de Oliveira, Deputy Commissioner of Expo 2020 Dubai in Portugal and Administrator of AICEP, commented: “The Expo 2020 Dubai is an excellent opportunity to show the world the authenticity and sophistication of Portuguese products represented by the art of gold and silver silk.”
The Portuguese Pavilion in the Sustainable Development Zone has been well received for its true ability to bring rich history, culture and tradition through various exhibits. Their first event included rich cuisine prepared by Michelin-starred chef Vítor Matos and served with the famous black pottery of Bisalhães, while the second event showcased a traditional dance performance by Pauliteiros de Miranda.
Their last event was a unique opportunity for Expo visitors to imagine the history of craftsmanship and heritage of several items displayed in two large display cabinets in the pavilion. Luís Pedro Martins, Chairman of the Tourist Office of Porto and Northern Portugal, commented: “We are proud to bring the best jewelers from Portugal to the Middle East and look forward to bringing the exquisite craftsmanship to the Portuguese Pavilion.”
Visitors to the pavilion will have the opportunity to witness the jewelry making process from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm every day.
