DUBAI: Skipper Rovman Powell’s all-around performance led Dubai Capitals to a 73-run win over Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the opening game of the DP World ILT20.
Powell scored 43 before dribbling for two wickets to secure a resounding victory for Dubai Capitals on Friday night.
Man of the Match Powell hit three sixes and as many as four fours in his 29-ball at-bat. He was heavily bolstered by opener Robin Usapa (43), issued by Dubai Capitals. The opener Jorut and Sikandaraza quickly batted 26 for 187 for 6 each.
In response, Abu Dhabi Knights were only allowed 114 runs while conceding nine wickets.
Powell (2/15), Akif Raja (2/20) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/16) shared six wickets for Dubai Capitals.
Uthappa and Joe Root scored 35 in the first wicket before the latter fell to right-armed middle-swinger Ali Khan from the United States.
Sri Lanka’s star player Bhanuka Rajapaksa held on for just nine balls and scored nine runs.
At halftime, Dubai Capitals beat Powell 62-2 to join Uthappa.
Uthappa’s 33-ball cameo, with three boundaries and two sixes, was ended by Sunil Narine in the 12th over.
Then began Powell’s show, bowling the Abu Dhabi Knights to every corner of the ground before going away in the 15th over.
Chasing an imposing goal, Abu Dhabi lost Colin Ingram early.
Opener Paul Sterling was given a reprieve in the second over before pulling Hazrat Lookman to boundary.
Isuru Udana finished third by losing just seven points.
Akif Raja braked to sack Brandon King late in the fifth.
Sterling continued his career as Abu Dhabi made 71 for 3 after 10 overs.
Abu Dhabi needed 117 balls in their last 10 rounds and Sterling cashed in his 50 off 36 balls by luck.
In the 12th inning, Powell struck again, taking a dangerous-looking Sterling off the long-range Rutter for 54. He hit 38 balls, including five bounds and two sixes.
