Powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits central Philippines | World News

strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake shock center the Philippines The U.S. Geological Survey said earlier Thursday. Shortly after 2:00 a.m. local time (1800 GMT), the shallow earthquake hit the province of Masbate Island, in the center of the archipelago nation.



The quake’s epicenter was 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the nearest village. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Earlier this month, another 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck hit a mountainous area in the southeastern Philippines.

The Philippines is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the arc of faults around the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur, according to the Associated Press. It is also hit by about 20 typhoons and tropical storms every year, making it one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.

In 1990, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the northern Philippines, killing nearly 2,000 people.
