Preparations for the 8th edition of WGES are complete

Preparations have been completed for the 8th World Green Energy Summit (WGES) with the theme “Leading Climate Action through Partnership: A Roadmap to Zero Emissions”.

The summit will be held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 28 to 29 September 2022 held.

WGES is organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) and Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council in collaboration with several international organisations.

Four themes

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman of Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa and Chairman of WGEO, said at a press conference at Jumeirah Madinat that the summit will focus on four major themes – energy, finance, food security, and youth.

Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council; Waleed Bin Salman, Vice Chairman of WGEO; and Abdulrahim Sultan, Director General of WGEO, attended the meeting.

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO, Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc); Ahmed bin Shafar, CEO, Emirates Central Cooling Systems Company (Empower); Ali Rashid Al Jarwan, CEO, Dragon Oil, Dewa , Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), officials from the UAE government and private sector organisations, as well as the summit’s sponsors and partners local, regional and international media.

“This year’s summit is taking place, although the Middle East presence continues to push the global sustainable development agenda through effective strategies to adapt to climate change and combat its adverse effects. Egypt and the UAE are preparing to host the UN Climate Change Conference in 2022 and 2023, respectively COP27 and COP28. The Arab world is at the heart of global events aimed at strengthening climate action and achieving global goals. The World Green Economy Summit will help to strengthen collaboration between partners and stakeholders and provide a solid foundation for hosting these two global events. Events create the ideal environment,” said Al Tayer.

Discussions on energy will look at decarbonizing the grid, increasing the share of clean and renewable energy, and reducing fossil fuels. On the financial front, the summit will focus on attracting and encouraging green investment, while discussions on food security will explore ways to increase the flexibility and sustainability of value chains to address food security-related challenges.

Empowering youth

The summit will highlight the need to support and empower youth as they are drivers of sustainable development and positive growth. The summit continues to strengthen youth engagement in climate action,” explained Al Tayer.

“This year’s summit will also highlight the UAE’s commitment to supporting global efforts to accelerate the transition to a green economy as directed by our wise leadership. The summit will serve as a platform to share the UAE’s leading experience in tackling climate change and achieving net zero emissions. and various national strategies and initiatives to consolidate the foundation of a low carbon economy. These strategies include the UAE Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% Dubai by 2050 of total electricity generation comes from clean energy sources,” he added.

Al Tayer also noted that in March 2022, the UAE government, represented by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, WGEO and Dewa, hosted the inaugural MENA Climate Week. The campaign was a remarkable success and received widespread acclaim from prominent institutions and figures around the world with a focus on climate action.

Climate Week Success

The event attracted more than 15,000 participants from 40 countries around the world, both in person and virtually. In addition to officials from the United Nations Climate Organization, it attracts 500 global speakers and experts, including government and private sector ministers and officials, as well as climate advocates.

“At this World Green Economy Summit, we will build on the outcomes of MENA Climate Week and the previous summit, and follow up on the progress made since the seventh Dubai Declaration. The summit will serve as a strategic platform to address Issues posed by international climate challenges and discuss means and ways to prepare for a more sustainable future. The summit will include more than 20 panel discussions and workshops featuring prominent global figures, prominent officials, policymakers, intellectuals, and international institutions and leaders of organisations will be involved. They will share their insights and expertise on best practices driving the transition to a sustainable green economy,” he said.

Al Tayer explained that during WGES 2022, the winners of the fourth edition of the UAE Energy Awards will be honoured. Organised by Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the award is under the theme “Inspiring Sustainable Energy Innovation”. This cycle of the awards received 187 outstanding applications from 16 countries around the world.

The summit will bring together renowned speakers, experts, thought leaders and policymakers. It will also hold a ministerial round table with some 25 ministers from around the world. These include Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, UAE; Dr. Muawieh Khalid Radaideh, Minister of Environment, Jordan; Bhupender Yadav, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, India; Dr. Nasser Yassin, Minister of Environment, Lebanon; Hussein Makhlouf, Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Syria; Ivete Joaquim Maibaze, Minister of Land and Environment of Mozambique; Naseer Ahamed, Minister of Environment of Sri Lanka; and Egyptian climate action advocate, Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin of COP 27 and renowned experts and experts from around the world. arab trade news agency
