The Canadian city of Mississauga witnessed clashes between the two groups during Diwali celebrations on Monday night. A video of the clash began to circulate on social media, in which the two groups can be seen confronting slogans. Mississauga-based online news outlet Insauga said the fight took place in the Malton area.
Video shows police trying to separate crowds during Diwali celebrations.
“One group could be seen waving the Indian flag, while another group held banners in support of the Khalistan referendum campaign,” Insauga said.
Peel Regional Police said officers received reports of fighting in the Goreway and Etude drive areas on Monday night. Police said they had received reports of hundreds of people fighting in a local parking lot.
“Fight – Goreway Dr / Etude Dr #Mississauga – #PRP responds to reports of 400-500 people fighting in parking lot – #PRP finds one injured person – Male is being assessed by @Peel_Paramedics – #PRP remains in the area as Things have calmed down – C/R 9:41pm – 22-0357908,” Peel Regional Police said in a tweet.
According to Global News Canada, no arrests were made.
The standoff between the two groups comes amid concerns about the rise of separatists in Khalistani in Canada. India recently asked Canada to stop the so-called “Khalistan referendum” held by anti-India elements in Ontario on November 6. India has made it clear that it will continue to voice these issues in New Delhi, Ottawa and elsewhere.
“We have dealt with this issue with the Canadian High Commission in Delhi as well as with the Canadian authorities. We will continue to deal with these issues in New Delhi, Ottawa and elsewhere,” MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on the so-called “Khalistan referendum” in Canada.
