QS world rankings show Saudi and UAE universities lead the Arab region in research

[ad_1]

The UAE’s top universities are leading the way in research in the Arab region and have earned recognition from the international academic community.

The University of the United Arab Emirates is the highest-ranked institution in the country, although it has slipped from fifth in the region last year to sixth this year in the QS World University Rankings of the best universities in the Arab region released on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz University ranked first in the region for the fourth year in a row, Qatar University in second and Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in third.

The UAE has 3 universities in the Arab region’s top 10, while the UAE has 10 universities in the top 50.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology improved from ninth in 2022 to seventh in 2023. The American University of Sharjah ranked eighth last year and is ninth in the latest list.

The UAE is home to the most prolific research institutions in the Arab region, with British universities in Dubai and Khalifa University scoring 100 points per faculty for the number of papers per faculty, new rankings show.

Emirates University is the most renowned institution in the country’s international academic community, with an Academic Reputation Score of 96.9/100.

Khalifa University’s international research network is ranked ninth in the region.

Quacquarelli Symonds is a global higher education analyst and compiler of the best universities in the Arab region, the latest edition of which includes 199 universities in 18 countries.

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is the first national university and one of the highest-ranked and largest higher education institutions in the country.

Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS, said: “The fact that the UAE has the highest concentration of top universities in the Arab region is significant, but not surprising.

“It reflects a long period of economic growth and a subsequent boom in education, which was supported by ambitious development programmes.

“The UAE is an attractive higher education destination for international faculty and students. This translates into excellent research productivity, thanks to a diverse and well-trained population.

“If the UAE wishes to close the gap with its regional and global competitors, it should ensure that such top-level research results have the same top-level impact and relevance, thereby increasing its global visibility.

“The Arab region has a thriving higher education ecosystem and its countries continue to assert themselves and their universities on the global stage.”

The latest edition of the ranking includes 14 universities in the UAE. Of these, five universities improved their rankings, seven fell, and two kept their places.

Abu Dhabi University jumped from 37th last year to 31st this year, while American University in Dubai fell from 28th last year to 33rd this year.

The University of Sharjah was ranked 15th and Zayed University was ranked 20th.
