As part of the trip, they will travel by train from Sydney to Orange, NSW on April 29. The would-be assassin placed a log on the train tracks in an attempt to derail the train as it approached Lisgow. An hour before the Queen’s train passed, another train scouted the tracks but found nothing, so the subsequent appearance of the log raised suspicions of an assassination plot.

The Queen’s train hit the wood, but was reportedly travelling too slowly to cause any damage. No one was ever arrested on suspicion of conspiracy — in fact, the story didn’t come to light until 2009, when Detective Superintendent Cliff McHardy spoke about it in retirement. He claimed that until then the government had successfully covered up the story to avoid embarrassment.

London, 1981

On June 13, 1981, at the annual Gala ceremony in London, crowds gathered to watch the Queen ride horses to attend the ceremony. A 17-year-old Marcus Sargent was in the crowd when he fired six shots from his starting pistol as the Queen rode past. The Queen’s horse Burmese was reportedly taken aback, but she managed to calm him down and keep riding.

Sarjeant was later arrested and tried. During the trial, Sarjeant reportedly admitted he wanted to be famous and was inspired by the assassination of John Lennon the previous year. era. He was sentenced to five years in prison under the Treason Act.

New Zealand, 1981

The Queen faced another assassination attempt in 1981, months after she was shot during a military parade while visiting a museum in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Christopher John Lewis, 17, was waiting in a nearby building when the Queen got out of the car when he shot from the window. He missed it despite witnesses reporting hearing “a loud bang,” according to multiple media reports.

Lewis was arrested eight days later and served three years, partly in a mental institution.
