Over 1,000 Paddington Bear toys left in memory of Queen Elizabeth have been donated to charity.
Many mourners paid tribute to the late monarch following her death at 96, leaving lovely tributes along with cards and flowers outside the royal residence, and now Buckingham Palace has announced the bears will be handed over to Barnardo’s Children’s Services Agency.
To accompany the announcement, Queen Camilla, who took over as charity patron from the Queen in 2016, released a new photo with some toys at Clarence House on 13 October, the first publication of the magazine64 anniversary. Paddington Books.
“These teddy bears will all be professionally cleaned and delivered over the next few weeks,” a press release states.
Barnardo welcomed the gesture.
Lynn Perry MBE, the charity’s chief executive, said: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been a patron of Barnardo for over 30 years and we are honoured to be able to honor the teddy bear that will be left in her memory. Provide homes. We promise to take care of these much-loved bears and bring joy to the children we support.
“We are very grateful for Her Majesty’s support in helping us raise awareness of the needs of vulnerable children and young people in the UK so we can continue to support them through our vital services.”
Paddington Bear has been linked with the Queen after appearing in a surprise TV skit during her platinum jubilee, in which she enjoys jam sandwiches with her beloved children.
Prince William has previously admitted seeing the bear sparked a wave of grief.
“It’s something you don’t expect,” he said. “Paddington is a new addition, but corgis have been around longer.”
