Soldiers who carried Queen Elizabeth’s coffin at her funeral also moved her body to its final resting place.

Eight men from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards were responsible for moving the late monarch’s 500-pound lead-lined coffin from Westminster Hall (where her remains were laid) 10 times to the cemetery in Westminster Abbey. King George VI Memorial Church at night.

Paying tribute to the work of the Armed Forces at the funeral, General Lord Dennett, the former UK chief of general staff, singled out the efforts of the coffin bearers.

He wrote in an opinion piece for The Daily Telegraph: “With such a diverse cast list, it would be offensive to single out any individual or unit for special praise, but consider a group of young people – from The Queen’s Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guard.

“They were recalled from the Middle East at short notice in order to carry out their traditional duties of a long-term plan, with full responsibility on their shoulders.

“A lead-lined coffin is very heavy, moving their precious load up and down the steps, getting in and out of cannon carts and coffins, in and out of vehicles – all under the constant gaze of billions of people on TV, not to mention the scrutiny of attention. Hire His Majesty the King, members of the Royal Family and senior members of the Ministry of Home Affairs – no easy task.

“These young guards deserve special recognition. Even when the cameras are turned off at the end of the day and a final private delivery takes place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, their duties are not over.

“Deep in the royal vaults below the chapel, the pallbearer will undertake one last unseen duty – moving the late Queen’s remains close to the final resting place of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh and her father, King George VI. Land. Once everything is done, then these young people can also relax and reflect on their very hard work, doing very well.”

Lord Dennett also promised that “pride and professionalism” would be on display again at the coronation of King Charles next year.

He wrote: “Moving forward is what we have to do now. We have a new king; we have a new prime minister. There are many challenges ahead. However, I am sure of one thing: the detailed plans for his coronation, His Majesty King Charles III, are underway. Well done, we will see once again the pride and professionalism of the British Armed Forces. We mourn the passing of the late monarch; we mourn very appropriately; we express our gratitude; Coronation.

“The band will march down the shopping centre again, the horse harness will be clanking, the monarch will enter the convent, and the crown of St Edward will be on his head. God bless the king.”
