Several Dubai residents have taken the initiative to distribute tons of relief supplies and resources such as food, water and furniture to victims badly affected by the recent floods in Fujairah.

One of the many social workers is Lorna Bancroft, a former radio presenter in Dubai. When Bancroft heard of flooding in parts of the country, she stocked up on supplies and merchandise in her car and left the next day to help victims.

“Thank God we can reach the residential area flooded by the trucks. We took our flotation boat and started to rescue people and animals,” Bancroft said. “It’s terrifying to see that there is no water to drink, no electricity, and the weather is not so good.”

When she heard about the inflow of water to homes in Fujairah and Karba, Bancroft and her friends quickly reached out to many people to donate relief supplies to flood victims.

“I was blown away by the response I received,” said Bancroft, who has been active in charity work.

Hundreds responded with messages of goodwill to help the residents of Fujairah and Karba.

Bancroft said several friends helped provide logistical details of the donation, and many donated their services.

“Like Cummins Arabia, for example. They kindly donated four eight-ton trucks so that we could deliver all the donations to the community. They’re amazing. We’re going to keep going and help rebuild the community,” Bancroft said .

Donations include hundreds of thousands of liters of water, food packs, children’s toys and games, cleaning supplies, and more.

“The residents of Fujairah are in desperate need of drinking water as the water in some parts of the emirate has been polluted. We have also received food assistance from hundreds of people (donors). We have given away perishable items so that flood victims can use them,” Bancroft explained.

Some organizations also donated furniture.

“Horizon International School donated tons of second-hand and unused furniture to give to many schools and residents in Fujairah. We collected it from the school in big trucks and gave it to the Kerari Cultural Association Fujairah Chaila-Kalba unit,” Bancroft said.

“To my surprise, I was contacted by a representative of a company in Dubai who wanted to donate nearly 300 sofas to the flood-affected victims in the eastern region.”

Members of the Kairari Cultural Society keep the furniture in their warehouses in Kalba and Fujairah.

“We will deliver these supplies to families and schools affected by the floods,” said Prince Tekutayail, a member of the Fujairah-Kairba branch of the Kairali Cultural Association.

Members of the welfare group said many families had been moved to government facilities but had not yet returned home.

“We have prepared a list of households affected by flooding. We will be adding more names and will begin distributing furniture and food packs soon,” Prince said.

Members said they would distribute donations based on family requests. “Most of the houses here need furniture. There are several families with children and we have toys and games for them,” said Nabeel Ahmed, one of 25 members of the welfare group, who Actively working around the clock so people can get back to their daily lives.

“As part of the donation, we are also purchasing mattresses, which we will also put on hold. We will provide mattresses to bachelor pads,” Nabeel said.

Fujairah has been hit by heavy rainfall starting on the evening of July 27, causing much of the city to be submerged in water. Through the tireless efforts of welfare groups, authorities and social workers, the emirate has almost returned to normal.
