Rakshabandhan symbolizes the bond of support and protection between siblings and God and devotees. It is celebrated among family and friends. On this auspicious day, the sisters tie a sacred thread called Rakhi around their brother’s right wrist while praying for their happiness and prosperity. In return, brothers give their sisters a gift as a promise of protection and love. The literal translation of Raksha Bandhan is “the bond of protection”.
Swami Brahmaviharidas, head of BAPS Hindu Mandir, who presided over the ceremony, said that thousands of Rakhi were handcrafted by female devotees in the UAE with love to give to each worker as a symbol of blessing to the brothers.
“The atmosphere is one of great love, equality and holiness…even this Mandir will be handcrafted with love. So in a very pious place, we pray that God guide and protect this beautiful country, its leadership and all who call it home,” he added.
One of the workers, Ram said: “I feel like I’m back home with my family. We thank Swami and Mandir for inviting us to celebrate Rakshabandhan with so many brothers and sisters.
Fr Mahat Swami Maharaj almost blessed the audience from India, praying for harmony and fraternity.
The participants then participated in a brick laying ceremony called “Shila Staapan”. They participated in a special puja (prayer) to sanctify a brick, which they personally carried and placed on a pedestal 5m high above the foundation of the new temple.
More than 100 volunteers help coordinate the process while carefully managing the logistics, preparing fresh food and small traditional souvenirs.
“There is a sense of belonging that cannot be described in words. This thread symbolizes mutual respect and solidarity. I am truly proud to serve these brothers who have worked tirelessly to help build amazing projects such as the upcoming beauty Mandir,” said Ashok Kotecha, chairman of BAPS Hindu Mandir.
To end the day, the audience enjoyed a festive hymn sung by saints and youth volunteers of BAPS Hindu Mandir. At the same time, each member of the assembly stepped forward to tie up their Rakhi and prayed for protection, contentment and happiness.
