New York-based unscripted production company Magilla Entertainment (bootlegger, prison redemption) is working on a new documentary series with heavy metal singer/songwriter and Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, Dirty Fifteen: Censorship and the War on Dirty (weight/ton).
The series will explore the bitter censorship battle between the Parents’ Music Resource Center (PMRC) and the broad range of musicians in the mid-1908s that eventually gained notoriety in U.S. Senate hearings.
In 1985, Tipper Gore, the wife of then U.S. Senator Al Gore, and a group of other prominent politician wives created PMRC to raise parental awareness of music that contained explicit content. The band identified 15 songs they found most offensive, with “Dirty Fifteen” being Snider and Twisted Sister’s national anthem “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” and songs from Mötley Crüe, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Prince, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper.
The PMRC is trying to create a music rating system, such as the MPAA, to warn consumers about lyrical content that is sexual, violent or “mysterious”. The trio of Snyder, Frank Zappa and John Denver are unlikely to testify on behalf of the music industry at the eventual congressional hearing in Washington, D.C.
The documentary series features unprecedented footage and exclusive interviews with artists, politicians and others, looking at the musicians and songs that found themselves included in PMRC’s Dirty Fifteen – the group that A playlist of music people hate. Time — and reflect on the lasting impact of hearings on music, pop culture, and free speech.
executive production Dirty Fifteen: Censorship and the War on Dirty Magilla Entertainment will be co-founder of Magilla Matthew Ostrom, Laura Palumbo Johnson and Jason Fox, alongside Snider and Ron Starrantino. Magilla and Snider are currently purchasing the project.
