Release of Next ‘Mission: Impossible’ Delayed by a Year Due to Ongoing Actors’ Strike

Paramount Pictures Delays Mission: Impossible 8 Release

Paramount Pictures recently made the decision to delay the release of the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible series by a year, with the new release date set for May 23, 2025. This decision comes as the ongoing actors’ strike reaches its three-month mark, resulting in significant disruptions for Hollywood studios.

Mission: Impossible 8 Delayed

The production of Mission: Impossible 8, a follow-up to Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, was initially paused in July. This pause coincided with Tom Cruise and the cast’s international promotional tour for Dead Reckoning. While the sequel was initially titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, it is currently listed simply as Mission: Impossible.

Box Office Performance

Although Dead Reckoning received positive reviews and grossed $567.5 million worldwide, it fell short of the 2018 installment Fallout, which earned $791.7 million globally, and Cruise’s 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, which raked in $1.5 billion. The 163-minute action thriller marked one of the highest-rated films in the franchise’s 27-year history but faced tough competition at the box office, particularly from movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Impact on Hollywood

The ongoing labor disputes in Hollywood have not only disrupted the release schedules of films scheduled for this fall, as many of them are waiting for stars to promote them (for example, Dune: Part Two, postponed to March). They have also affected the release plans for some major films slated for next year.

Several Marvel films have been pushed back, along with the third Venom installment. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been indefinitely delayed after its initial March 2024 release date.

A Quiet Place Prequel Rescheduled

In addition to the Mission: Impossible 8 rescheduling, Paramount also announced that A Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel to the post-apocalyptic horror series starring Lupita Nyong’o, will now be released on June 28, taking the slot previously held by Dead Reckoning.
