LOS ANGELES (AP) — Anne Heche was in the hospital Saturday after her car hit a house and caught fire, a representative told People magazine.
Herce was in stable condition the day after Friday’s accident, the unnamed representative told the magazine. According to People, her family and friends demanded that her privacy be respected.
Los Angeles Police Officer Tony Im said her speeding car pulled into a T-shaped intersection shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, veered off the road, and crashed into the house in the Mar Vista borough of West Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said the car was parked in the two-story home and started a fire that took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to put out. Officials have not identified Heche as the driver who was pulled from the car because it was inside the house, but said she was registered.
TV news video showed a blue Mini Cooper Clubman badly damaged and burned, being dragged out of the home and a blond woman struggling on a stretcher as firefighters put her into an ambulance.
No other injuries were reported and no arrests were made. Detectives are investigating.
Her representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
Born in Ohio, Heche made his debut on the NBC soap “Another World” from 1987 to 1991. She won a Daytime Emmy for the role.
In the late 1990s, she became one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, appearing regularly on magazine covers and big-budget films. She co-starred with Johnny Depp in 1997’s Donny Blasco; with Tommy Lee Jones in 1997’s Volcano; 1998’s Six Days Seven Nights with Harrison Ford “; 1998’s Return to Heaven with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix, and an ensemble with the 1997 original “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
From 1997 to 2000, her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres boosted her fame and gained widespread public attention.
In the fall of 2000, shortly after the two split, Heche was hospitalized after knocking on a stranger’s door in a rural area near Fresno, California. Authorities said she looked shocked, disoriented and spoke incoherently to residents.
In her memoir, “Call Me Crazy,” published the following year, Heche spoke about her lifelong struggles with mental health and abusive childhood.
From 2001 to 2009, she was married to videographer Coleman Laffoon. The two have a son. During her relationship with actor James Tupper, she had another son, who was her co-star in the TV series The Man in the Tree.
For the past two decades, Heche has worked in small films, Broadway and TV shows. She recently had recurring roles on the web series “Chicago Police Department” and “All Rise,” and in 2020 was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.”
