LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — With Brunswick County pulling out of the proposed Leland baseball team, questions have been looming over whether the whole deal is over.
The Town of Leland said they remain committed to bringing a baseball team to town, REV Entertainment told WWAY of their situation.
Sean Decker, president of REV Entertainment, said they are still interested.
“Yes, we’ve been public about our willingness to publicly match up to $100 million for this project, but nothing has changed for us, we’re still excited about the market, the region and the opportunity.”
Estimated initial costs to build the stadium and prepare the field will be nearly $120 million, according to emails from the Town of Leland.
When asked about the budget, Decker said things could change.
“The conceptual budget there is that, it’s conceptual. So, we’re involved, the town is involved, the developers are involved. So, there’s a lot of cost in it, and the stadium is one of them. The website, the infrastructure and stuff like that is another part. So, the way we look at it is, frankly, there’s a lot of speculation that has changed a lot since launch.”
REV Entertainment recently sold its two minor league teams in North Carolina, which also calls into question the viability of building a team from scratch in Leland.
Decker said those situations were different.
“The situation with the teams that were sold was nothing like what we saw in Leland, so … the question, you know, ‘Are you not too keen on minor league baseball or professional baseball or anything’ … definitely not . In this case, the deal is fundamentally very different in terms of our investments around property. We’re going to be investing there for a long time.”
Decker also added that the next step is to find out the results of the feasibility study from the town of Leland.
Once released, we’ll really know if Leland will play.
Leland Township said it would not comment until the study came back.
