Rihanna made headlines after she went on-air during the Super Bowl LVII halftime show on Sunday, February 13, 2023.
Over the years, the famous halftime show has attracted big names in music to perform for the event, including Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Eminem, The Weeknd, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Bruce Springsteen.
However, anyone who headlines a halftime show never actually gets paid to perform.
“We don’t pay artists,” an NFL spokesperson told Forbes 2016. “We cover the fees and production costs”, via people magazine.
NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy confirmed to Newsweek that the league did pay “all costs associated with the show” — while artists aren’t charged to appear, they are paid at the union rate, which is the minimum wage guaranteed through union contracts.
