Last week, when the government of Prime Minister Florin Citu lost in a vote of no confidence, Romania plunged into turmoil.

Romanian President nominates an EU veteran as prime minister Vote of no confidence Put one of the poorest countries in Europe into political turmoil.

The former EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos, who served as prime minister, surprised opponents when he was nominated by President Klaus Iohannis on Monday.

To take office, he will need the support of the parliamentary majority, which is by no means easy in a fragmented political landscape.

“Our goal is to get Romania out of the crisis, and for this we need all political forces to take a lot of responsibility,” Ciolos said.

Last week, Romania was plunged into turmoil. The minority government of Florin Citu, the then nine-month-old prime minister, lost a vote of no confidence in the parliament. A few weeks later, a coalition ally withdrew from his government. , Accused him of “dictatorship.”

Ciolos’ reformist Alliance to Save Romania (USR) deprived Citu of a majority of seats in Parliament by withdrawing its ministers. It then filed a motion of no confidence and refused to return to the government until Citu was overthrown.

Situ is still trying to form a new coalition based on his National Liberal Party (PNL) party, which complicates the efforts of his opponents to deal with the crisis through a new leadership.

President Iohannis told reporters on Monday that during parliamentary consultations, Ciolos’s party “was the only party that made recommendations to me”.

The Soviet Union, which controls only 17% of the seats in the parliament, will have 10 days to form a government and require a vote of confidence in the parliament.

Opposition groups have said so far that they will not support the minority cabinet and will not ally with the relatively new group USR.

Romania’s political paralysis is threatening its economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and its efforts to reduce its huge double deficit amid rising energy prices.
