RTA partners with Al Futtaim to deploy 360 hybrid electric vehicles

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Al Futtaim Automotive to deploy 360 vehicles, including electric and hybrid models, for key meetings and events in Dubai over three years.

As part of the agreement to support RTA’s Sustainable Transport Network and the ‘Dubai 2050 Zero Emissions Public Transport’ strategy, RTA’s Official Mobility Partner will also contribute to the further development of the Authority’s charging technology and infrastructure.

The agreement was signed by Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General and Chairman of the Executive Board, and Paul Willis, President of Al-Futtaim Automotive, on the sidelines of the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Barcelona, ​​with several senior officials representing both organizations present.

Under the three-year partnership agreement, Al Futtaim Automotive will supply a total of 360 electric and hybrid vehicles and buses, including 10 electric buses, 250 electric vehicles and 100 hybrid vehicles.

Al-Futtaim Automotive will also provide the necessary charging infrastructure, including 10 charging units capable of supplying direct current and alternating current. In addition, the group will provide technical support for electric fleet-specific operational activities, electric vehicles and the utilization of advanced technologies.

Al Tayer said: “The partnership supports the UAE’s efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, a goal that aligns with the goals of D33, the Dubai Economic Agenda. The D33 strategy aims to underpin Dubai’s position as one of the world’s top urban economies by status to strengthen ties with the private sector.”

“The agreement is part of the implementation of the ‘Dubai Zero Emission Public Transport 2050’ strategy, which aims to fully transition all buses, taxis and limousines to zero-emission vehicles. The RTA aims to convert 100% of its buses Switching to Electric and Hydrogen – Powering vehicles by 2050 and converting 100% of its taxi fleet to electric and hydrogen vehicles by 2040,” he noted.

“RTA has long been a pioneer in sustainable transport in the region, deploying hybrid vehicles in its taxi fleet as early as 2008 and rolling out electric vehicles as taxis since 2017,” he added.

Paul Willis, President of Al Futtaim Automotive, said: “As the UAE’s pioneering mobility group, we strongly believe in the power of partnerships to move the industry and society forward. Our commitment doesn’t stop there; we have also established Al – Futtaim Electric Mobility Company provides a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem. According to him, Al-Futtaim Automotive will supply 10 electric buses, including Volvo models, each equipped with cutting-edge smart technology.

These buses feature an intuitive user interface that helps drivers manage their routes through seamless integration with vehicle systems for efficient communication and data exchange.

The smart bus is also equipped with an innovative passenger counting system that uses high-tech sensors to monitor the number of passengers entering and leaving the bus. The bus caters to the determined by designating a spot for wheelchair users, he explained.
