The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the initial phase of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) expansion project was completed in November 2020, increasing its coverage of Dubai’s main road network from 11% to 60%.

It is now preparing for the second phase of the project in the coming months, which will cover the entire main roads of the emirate.

As a result, the total length of roads covered by Dubai ITS will jump from 480 kilometers to 710 kilometers, said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General and Chairman of the Executive Board.

According to him, the construction of the Dubai ITS Center has achieved several achievements in the first phase.

“The facility is one of the largest and most advanced traffic control centres in the world in terms of using smart technology, managing traffic systems and supporting current and future modes of transport,” explained Al Tayer.

“This project is a dynamic technology hub that uses the latest applications of artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things and communication systems to manage the flow of traffic in the emirate. It has a vast array of traffic monitoring devices, information capture gadgets, and other smart services .Through ITS, the centre manages Dubai’s current and future road network,” he added.

Al Tayer noted that expanding ITS coverage is a key factor in supporting the government to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world, which involves the use of smart technology and software to ease mobility around Dubai.

According to the RTA, the project improved incident monitoring by 63 percent, reduced emergency response time by 30 percent, and reduced travel time by 20 percent.

He added that these improvements are due to the use of dynamic message signs, integration with RTA’s corporate command and control centre and connection with Dubai Police’s command and control centre.arab trade news agency
