Ruben Ostlund shares new details on his next film, entertainment system brokenhe expects it to be another international co-production.

Having previously revealed that the film will be set on a long flight where the digital entertainment console stops working, Ostrund now says his goal is to bring the story to the point where passengers land the plane.

he also told Screen He hopes the film will become an international co-production like the Palme d’Or winner Sorrow Triangleand confirmed that he will be reunited with French producer Philippe Bobber through the latter’s co-production office.

Bober produced Ostlund’s last three works – force majeure, square and Sorrow Triangle – Co-producer and associate producer of both before that, Play (2011) and unwilling (Year 2008).

As the script is at an early stage, a production date has yet to be set. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the co-production office is expected to handle the film’s sales, as it has done for Ostrender’s last five films.

ostlund told Screen He has “began collecting ideas for this story”, which he will write himself, but also has input from other collaborators — including his wife, Sina Gortz, who Ostlund says “has put in 10,000 hours” of work Sorrow Triangle.

For actors, Ostrund will continue his usual practice of working with a group of new actors, except triangle Star Woody Harrelson has revealed his involvement in a new Cannes film. “It’s hard for me to reuse actors; you want to create a whole new universe every time,” the director said.

Regarding the plot, Ostrund described the film as a “disaster movie”.

“Shortly after takeoff, the crew gave passengers a horrific notice – unfortunately, the entertainment system was turned off,” he said. “As a result, passengers are doomed to 15 hours of non-digital distraction in their lives.

“It will be very interesting to investigate how we got into chaos on that flight,” he continued. “I think it’s 100 percent possible, in a credible way, to cause such chaos in flight that it crashes.”

Unlike many filmmakers who like to keep projects under wraps until they go into production, Ostrund is keen to discuss entertainment system brokenas a way to get creative.

One such story that could appear in the film is about “someone on a flight from Europe to the US, they were flying over Greenland, and all of a sudden it was very violent.

“Twenty percent of the oxygen masks fell; but only 20 percent. So getting the oxygen masks became a struggle. Half a minute later, the crew came out and said, ‘Sorry, nothing happened, it was a false alarm “—kind of like the crowd force majeure Happening [when an avalanche causes panic amongst a group of skiers]. Because then you’re going to spend four or five hours with the guy you’re wrestling with. “

Revolutionary opportunity

Ostlund’s 2022 Palme d’Or winner played well for a local Sarajevo audience when the festival opened on Friday. The film depicts passengers and crew of varying social status on a luxury yacht; social norms are thrown into chaos when the yacht crashes in a storm.

With rising energy prices sparking social unrest across much of Europe, Ostlund said revolutions often require triggers. He cites a volcanic eruption in Iceland in 1783 that served as a catalyst for the French Revolution due to its impact on crop yields. There was also a photo of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie feeding his dogs extravagant meat, prompting massive outrage among hungry crowds.

“By the time that photo was posted and it went viral, people were fed up,” he said. “It may be different at different times. It will be interesting to see if it will be [social unrest] will happen or not. “

He also criticized European societies for being too “individualistic” and limiting collective progress.

“We’ve lost trust in the state,” Ostrund said. “In 1967, Sweden changed from left to right. Isn’t it amazing that eight million people, day-to-day, can adapt to this? In the years that followed, there were actually more car accidents than traffic history. less.

“It illustrates how we organize people in a society and create a new kind of social contract. When it comes to the bigger issues we are dealing with today, we would not be able to deal with them if we had an individualistic society , and this society only cares about how I position myself and what I like.”

and Screen Shortly after the stabbing of British-Indian author Salman Rushdie on stage in New York, Ostrund called the incident “a little scary” and said media attention to the conflict, in turn, could lead to More violence.

“It’s almost like [select media outlets] Forget culture is actually creating behavior,” he said. “Another young person who is excluded may want to get that position by making terrorist attacks.

“The media will start by saying the world is very dangerous, very violent, etc. Then the world will follow.”

As for a potential awards event Sorrow TriangleOstlund said “it’s amazing to win an Oscar”, but he sarcastically described the Palme d’Or – which he has two – as “the best award”.

He added that it was difficult to attend the event without his wife and 11-month-old son. But they will be with him “quite a lot” to promote and celebrate the film.

On Friday, Ostlund received the Medal of Honor from Sarajevo, followed by a “Coffee and…” course and a masterclass on his career so far.Neon lights are releasing Sorrow Triangle In the US on October 7, Curzon is followed by the UK and Ireland on October 28.
