Russia: Navalny criticizes Apple, Google for deleting voting apps | Election News

[ad_1]

The imprisoned opposition leader said that the US technology giant acted as an accomplice to Russian President Putin and removed the anti-government tactical voting application from the store.

According to news published on social media accounts, the sentenced Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny accused Google and Apple of showing “cowardice” and deleted a voting app before the parliamentary election last week. And acted as an accomplice of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Navalny’s supporters earlier accused the US-based tech giant of succumbing to pressure from the Kremlin to remove the anti-government tactical voting app from their stores when the three-day parliamentary vote that ended on Sunday began. The app was designed by Navalny’s allies to provide people with detailed voting suggestions to defeat the pro-Kremlin United Russia Party.

Based on comments made on social media accounts on Thursday, Navalny, who was in prison, added his criticisms.

“The giants Apple @Apple and Google @Google have complied with the requirements of the Kremlin and removed our apps from their stores. My beloved YouTube deleted our videos, and Telegram Messenger blocked our bots,” Naval Nee said in a post reposted through his lawyer.

“I know that most people who work in companies like Google, Apple, etc. are honest and kind people. I urge them not to endure the cowardice of their boss,” he said.

Navalny also stated that he was “very frustrated and disappointed” with Pavel Durov, the founder and owner of the Telegram messaging app. During the election, the intelligent voting robot also disappeared from the app.

Durov, who was born in Russia, once said that he is paying attention to Apple and Google, which “set the rules of the game for developers like us.”

‘The most serious crime’

As supporters of Navalny and other parties accused of large-scale fraud, the result of Monday’s election in the House of Commons of the State Duma allowed the United Russia Party to win. The United Russia Party won 49.8% of the votes among the 225 seats allocated by the party and won 198 seats out of the 225 seats of legislators directly elected by voters. The Election Committee stated that the vote was clean, and the Kremlin said it was an honest vote.

A person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named, said last week that Google decided to delete the application after being informed that local employees might face jail.

In response to this comment, Navalny said in his social media post: “If this is the case, then silence about this is the most serious crime. This is an encouragement to hostage-taking terrorists.”

The Kremlin welcomed the removal of the application, stating that these tech giants conformed to the “word and spirit” of Russian law.

Navalny was detained in January and witnessed his allies being arrested or fleeing the country, and his organization was banned.
