Russia says warship prevented US destroyers from entering its waters | Sputnik Military News

[ad_1]

The Ministry of Defense stated that the Russian navy warship approached the US destroyer “Chafi” to force it to leave the area.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that a Russian warship prevented a US Navy destroyer from attempting to invade Russia’s territorial waters in the Sea of Japan.

The incident on Friday came as Russia and China conducted joint naval exercises in the area, following other close encounters between Russian and Western warships. This seems to reflect Moscow’s intention to increase the risk of deterring the United States and its allies from performing missions near Russian waters, because the relationship between Russia and the West is at a post-Cold War low.

Washington did not immediately respond.

The Ministry stated that the Russian Navy’s Admiral Tributs destroyer approached the US destroyer USS Chafi, forcing it to leave the area near Russian waters, which was declared a ban on shipping due to shelling exercises there. Part of the Russian exercise.

It said that the Russian ship approached the US warship after leaving the Peter the Great Bay area despite repeated warnings. The ministry alleges that after “trying to cross the Russian maritime border,” the US warship changed course and accelerated away when the two ships were only 60 meters (66 yards) apart.

It condemned the US destroyer’s exercises for “crude violations” of international rules for avoiding collisions of ships and the 1972 agreement between Moscow and Washington on the prevention of air and maritime accidents.

In June of this year, Russia stated that one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs on the path of the British destroyer Defender, driving it out of the Black Sea near the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The United Kingdom denied this claim, insisting that its ship was not shot, and stated that it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.

Like most countries in the world, although the Crimea Peninsula was annexed by Russia in 2014, the UK still recognizes Crimea as part of Ukraine.

The June incident marked the first time since the Cold War that Moscow admitted to using live ammunition to deter NATO warships, highlighting the increasing threat of military collisions between Russia and the West in tensions.

Moscow warned in June that if the invading warship does not listen to advice, it is prepared to target the invading warship.

After Moscow annexed Crimea and accused Russia of interference in elections, hacking attacks and other tensions, Russia’s relations with the West fell to their lowest level since the Cold War.

In other recent naval incidents, the Russian military stated that the British destroyer “Dragon” invaded Russian waters near Crimea in October 2020. The USS John S McCain reportedly Alleged that it violated the Russian border in the Sea of Japan in November.

After these incidents, Russia rejected the arguments of the United States and the United Kingdom that its warships exercise the so-called “innocent passage” rights under international maritime law.

The maneuvers of Russian warships in Friday’s incident seem to indicate that Moscow is prepared to raise its stakes to prevent similar invasions in the future.

In 1988, a Soviet frigate collided with the American cruiser USS Yorktown, which was “harmlessly passing” in Russian waters, in the Black Sea, causing damage to the American warship. This dangerous close encounter reminded people of the Cold War incident. .
