UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Abu Dhabi in a sign of closer ties between the two countries.
Emirates News Agency WAM reported on Thursday that the meeting will discuss existing strategic partnerships and bilateral efforts to “enhance prospects for more cooperation in all areas”.

“During the talks, the ministers will compare positions on key items on the global and Middle East agenda,” a statement from the Russian foreign ministry said.
The ministers “will focus on the need to address ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa through an inclusive dialogue that takes into account the legitimate interests of all parties involved. Developments in Yemen, Libya, Syria and the Arab-Israeli peace process will be discussed in this context ,” it added.
Lavrov is on a two-day trip to the oil-producing Gulf country. The Russian Foreign Ministry shared his agenda, showing the diplomat attended the Sir Baniyas Peace and Security Forum and visited the Russian School in Abu Dhabi.
The meeting came amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow insisted was an “extraordinary military operation.”
“Upcoming visit [to the UAE] will be an important part of the intensive political dialogue in which the two countries maintain regular contacts at high and other levels,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“Sheikh Abdullah stressed the importance of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in various fields and the need to strengthen it,” WAM reported.

The UAE and Russia maintain strong strategic relations. Compared with 2020, the bilateral trade volume will increase by 64.5% in 2021 to $5.36 billion, making the Gulf countries Russia’s largest trading partner.
