Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (October 9) blamed Ukrainian secret services for the huge explosion at Kerch Bridge. Putin described this as an “act of terrorism”.
“The authors, perpetrators and sponsors are secret Ukrainian agencies,” Putin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies during a meeting with the head of the investigative committee.
The Kerch Bridge connects Russia to the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia. It was a major transport route, supplying soldiers and equipment for Russia’s war in southern Ukraine.
“There is no doubt that this is an act of terrorism aimed at destroying vital Russian civilian infrastructure,” Putin added.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. After sustained progress in the first months of the conflict, Russian troops had to retreat in the face of a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Ukrainian troops have recaptured thousands of square kilometers of territory in the past month.
The explosion of the Kerch Bridge and the ensuing disruption to traffic was a symbolic personal blow for Putin, as he personally presided over the bridge’s inauguration.
