Ryan Johnson struggles in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ | Entertainment

[ad_1]

Ryan Johnson says the backlash against Star Wars: The Last Jedi is “incredibly painful.”

The 48-year-old filmmaker helmed the middle of the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, but the film divided fans of the sci-fi series, and Ryan struggled to deal with criticism at first.

“It was a process. It wasn’t easy at first. It was very painful,” Ryan told Empire magazine.

The director of Knives Out has revealed that he was particularly sensitive to social media criticism ahead of the film’s release.

“Before the movie came out, if someone tweeted something a little mean to me, I was like, ‘Oh my God, someone out there doesn’t like me…I have to fix this,'” Johnson said.

The director says he has been able to overcome the backlash and believes the experience has actually benefited him.

“In the context of social media, and maybe just as a person in the world, it’s a very healthy thing to be set on fire,” Rian said.

“You could also say those burned out nerve endings are a bad thing.”

Although the 2017 film divided the audience, Rian admitted that the project is “even more proud” five years after its release.

“Five years later, I’m even more proud of it,” he said. “When I’m hitting the ball, I’m really swinging on the ball.”

Johnson added: “I don’t think it’s possible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking that it’s a myth that we grew up with and how that myth, that story, fits into us and affects us.

“The ultimate goal is not to slip away — the goal is to understand the basic, fundamental power of the myth. Ultimately I hope this film is an affirmation of the power of the ‘Star Wars’ mythology in our lives.”
