The Sabeel fountain is a series of nearly 40 beautiful and eye-catching drinking fountains, designed to refresh and amaze visitors to the world’s largest cultural gathering, all over the public spaces of the Expo 2020 site.
From a fountain designed like a beautiful letter box with embossed letters of the artist, to another fountain featuring a mini “natural world”, the innovative Sabeel fountain is a contemporary artistic interpretation of the traditional UAE drinking fountain-sabeel . They reflect the traditions of the country and its spirit of hospitality, tolerance and generosity.
The initiative is a collaboration between Expo 2020 and Art Jameel. It started in September 2019 and was launched in the Sabeel 2020 public solicitation. The design competition received more than 100 proposals and was supervised by an internationally renowned jury. The jury selected and awarded two design cooperation projects-the UAE creative studio Architecture + Other Things and the design teams Faissal El-Malak and Alia Bin Omair.
Their designs, called “Iconic Fountains” and “Green Water”, have been copied, and there are 37 fountains in the public space of Expo 2020. Green water combines strong materials and plants, highlighting the goal of Expo 2020 to become the most sustainable Expo in history, while Nahel features the theme of harmonious connection between humans, nature and technology, showing the opportunities of Expo 2020 The sub-themes of, mobility and sustainability.
Expo 2020 also invited two contemporary artists, Nasir Nasrallah and Dana Awartani, to jointly create an iconic large drinking fountain, the artistic fountain. Nasrallah’s “Letter to Water” can be regarded as a love letter to water, while Avatani’s “Water Well” is like a stone well.
Marjan Faraidooni, Chief Experience Officer of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “Through these beautiful and innovatively designed drinking fountains, we invite visitors to take a moment to stop and think about their connection with this most precious resource when they quench their thirst. The Sabeel fountain is also for the public. It provides an unmissable opportunity to discover design talents in the UAE and the region.”
The Sabeel Fountain invites millions of visitors to explore the UAE’s centuries-old tradition of sharing water with those in need through public drinking fountains. As part of the legacy of the next World Expo, the fountain will have a lasting impact and will continue to exist as part of the people-oriented future city 2020 area after the closing of the World Expo.

Sabeel Fountains uses enhanced health and safety measures during operation, including integrating hands-free sensor faucets into all designs instead of buttons, and incorporating bottle filling faucets instead of aerators.
The 2020 World Expo will last until March 31, 2022. In a six-month celebration of human wisdom, innovation, progress and culture, visitors from all over the world are invited to join the ranks of creating a new world.
