Safety experts in-depth understanding of sports, entertainment safety planning

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) — A safety consultant spoke with KLTV athletic director Michael Coleman about the recent Los Angeles Rams venue violations and safety issues at the Oscars.

Kansas City-based security specialist Anthony Burnside has handled security issues for many large live events. Today, he recounted how people managed to “walk through the cracks,” like the ones who got into the field at the recent Los Angeles Rams game.

“NFL security was able to grab one of them, unfortunately, for some reason, the second person appears to have gone through the crack with that device,” Burnside said.

Burnside posted on social media that the player’s role in responding to the breach may be questionable, putting them at risk of prosecution. As it turns out, over the next few days, they were.

“Smart money is standing up,” Burnside said. “It’s basically the same as someone breaking into your house and hurting themselves, and they can sue you. And, of course, the gentleman did file a police report the next day, according to TMZ. So, your best bet is Step down. Let security handle it; that’s what security is for.”

When asked if the lawsuit was successful, he said: “I’m not a lawyer; I think — one of the advantages of living in this country is that you can sue anyone. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be in court. See one day… who knows.”

Burnside goes on to explain how security personnel approach the venue before a major event. “When you see a stadium, when you see a secured environment, you have to think about the reaction time and how the security responds to quell the threat.”

“I’m sure the next game, NFL security will be set up to quell these threats. Think twice before you insert yourself into the equation,” Burnside said of the player’s role .

Still, he stressed the importance of strong security. “You have to be careful because you don’t know that person’s intentions,” he said.

The conversation then turned to events at the 94th Academy Awards, when actor Will Smith took the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock.

“There’s security there, and I think Mr. Rock has his own security team there, but when you do these shows — and, you know, I’ve been in a lot of them — when you do those special shows, You have security present and you do a rehearsal for a show. I think some people think it’s part of the show,” Burnside said. “No one thought another A-lister would come on stage and play another A-lister. It’s unbelievable, but now it’s part of the threat matrix.”

Burnside explains how security planning evolved in this way as events unfolded. “We planned from start to finish for every possible attack. That person might not appear to be in the card because no one would think that, but now we did. Now we know it’s a possibility.”

In the end, he said an important part of incident security planning comes down to response time. “We know the attack happened within 25 feet or less, so what’s the response time? You have to take that into account… Of course, this particular case of Mr. Smith, I don’t think anyone really thought that was going to happen. This situation…future shows and future events now take this into account.
