Saif Al Balushi and Khalifa Al Neyadi celebrate double crown in second meeting in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Tadhg O’Shea won his 10th title of the new season ahead of Pat Dobbs in his second race in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

O’Shea is bidding for an 11th UAE Jockeys title and won it all in race two when he rode Ernst Oertel-trained AF Thayer on the silks of Khalid Khalifa Al Naboodah.

He could have added to his tally had it not been for Omani driver Saif Al Balushi, who put the Irishman close to the finish line in his final run while delivering a superb double for coach Khalifa Al Neyadi.

Al Balushi of Shoja’a Muscat started from the 200m pole and held on to form to win by two and a half lengths over O’Shea and AF Motaghatres.

The Omanis returned to the winner’s circle 30 minutes later when they brought back Adleh in the final 100 meters to beat O’Shea and AF Alsarem with three quarters to go.

Shoja’a Muscat won his third race of the season and Adleh finished fifth in Sharjah’s dirt track, his second race of the season.

“We always take our horses with the hope of winning and tonight was one of those good days,” Al Neyadi said after clinching his third title of the season.

“I think they both benefited from the previous games. Adleh ran really well in the Sharjah defeat and we quietly believed in his chances. Saif played two good games for us.”

Irfan Ellahi got a pass this season as Jean van Overmeire led JAP Ytwaad to victory in the opener. Patrick Cosgrave brought home Reem Baynounah and gave inaugural trainer Nisren Mahgoub a fantastic start to the season, his first win for first-time rider.

Royston Ffrench put in a solid performance on Salem bin Ghadayer’s Mordin, comfortably over Al Qaqaa by four and a half lengths for the Thoroughbred’s only prize.
