Sir Salman Rushdie is ‘talking and joking’ days after being stabbed multiple times.
The 75-year-old writer was attacked on stage at an event in New York state on Friday (12.08.22) and airlifted to hospital, but his agent Andrew Wylie confirmed the ” The “Satanic Poems” writer has now been taken away from the ventilator that helped him breathe and communicate again.
Author Aatish Taseer wrote in a now-deleted tweet: “Just received the most exciting news: ‘Salmoan is off ventilator and talking (and joking)'”
Andrew confirmed that the author’s account of Salman’s condition was correct.
The agent previously revealed that the writer “likely” lost an eye following the attack.
“Salman could lose an eye; a nerve in his arm was cut; his liver was stabbed and damaged,” he said.
Hadi Matar, 24, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder at an arraignment hearing on Saturday (Aug 13, 22).
“Hadi Matar, the man responsible for the attack, has now been formally charged with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault,” Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said before the hearing.
Police believe the suspect acted alone. However, Schmidt confirmed that state and federal authorities are still studying whether any additional fees can be added.
Witness Linda Abraham previously recalled that the suspect tried to keep attacking Rushdie even after he was restrained.
She told The New York Times: “About five men pulled him away and he was still stabbing. He was just angry, angry. Like very strong and fast.”
Rushdie has been subjected to death threats from Islamists for years after publishing his controversial 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” which was considered blasphemous by many Muslims.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa calling for the assassination of Rushdie, the author of which went into hiding for nearly a decade.
