Salvadoran court says the president can be re-elected for two terms. Political news

[ad_1]

The ruling paved the way for current President Nayib Bukele (Nayib Bukele) to run for re-election in 2024.

The Supreme Court of El Salvador ruled that the country’s president can be re-elected for two consecutive terms, opening the door for current President Nayib Bukele to run for re-election in 2024.

The ruling was issued late on Friday. Judges appointed by the lawmakers of Buckler’s ruling party in May handed down the decision after they removed the former judge. This step was condemned by critics as a “coup d’état” and caused parliamentary action. Strongly criticized. The United States and other foreign powers.

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to allow a “president who did not take office in the previous period to run for the second time”.

This decision may make the 40-year-old Booker the first president to serve for more than five years since the 1950s, which may make him popular, but it will create differences.

The Booker government is also preparing to carry out constitutional reforms aimed at extending the president’s term from five to six years, including the possibility of repealing the president’s term.

This has not yet been submitted to the Salvadoran Parliament, which is controlled by Booker’s party and its allies.

Booker did not immediately comment on the court’s ruling.

In 2014, the same court ruled that the president will wait 10 years after re-election in the remaining office.

Elected in 2019, Bukele enjoys broad support in El Salvador over his promises to fight organised crime and improve security in the violence-racked country.

But for a long time, he has been accused of autocratic tendencies.

Last year, Bukele sent troops to the country’s parliament to put pressure on lawmakers.
