Sam Smith thinks BRIT snub for women is a ‘disgrace’ | Entertainment

[ad_1]

Sam Smith thinks it’s a “disgrace” that no woman has been nominated for Best Artist at the Brit Awards.

The “Unholy” hitmaker, who is non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, was one of the first musicians to call for a “reflection” at the awards ceremony, leading organizers to make the event the first major UK awards to abolish gender categories , but they still believe there is “a long way to go” after this year’s prestigious award shortlist featured only male nominees.

Sam said of the controversy: “It’s a disgrace.

“Things are moving forward, but obviously not yet. From seeing that [best artist] List, there is still a long way to go.

“It’s very frustrating. “It feels like it should be easy to do.

“[The BRITs] Everyone just needs to be celebrated because it’s not just artists getting awards. Awards are for kids who watch TV and think, “I can make music like this.” When I was young, if I saw more queer people at these awards, my heart would have lit up. Awards are there to motivate. “

The 30-year-old singer believes that there should be a lot of female artists in the shortlist, rather than just Harry Styles, Stormzy, George Ezra, Central Cee and Fred Again competing for this award.

Asked which women should be shortlisted, they said: “Cat Burns. Anne Marie. Florence Welch. There is so much incredible female talent in the UK – they should be on that list.”

Meanwhile, while Sam believes their new album, Gloria, is their most authentic record yet, they insist they were never “unreal,” just less comfortable with themselves.

Sam said: “I’ve always been real.

“I just feel like asking a 24-year-old to be 100% of himself in front of 20,000 people is never going to happen. I’m showing 70% of who I am, and a lot of that has to do with me being gay. Still , as I got older, I realized there’s nothing to be ashamed of. I’m not being unreal — you just keep things to yourself until you’re ready.”
