Samavi impressed on the front nine with two eagles on the par-4 fifth, a 428-yard, two-hole shot index, before catching smalls on Nos. 8 and 9. Bird, eventually out with 33 strokes. Another birdie on No. 11, followed by bogeys on Nos. 12 and 14 to go home with a 37.
Tied for second and third at one-over par 73 are current Medal of Merit leaders Sam Mullan (JGE) and Ahmed Wahid Naim (Ayers Club).
The local leader representing Saadiyat Beach Golf Club was Sassinethan, who tied for fourth with a 74.
Last weekend’s Els Club Men’s Open champion and defending champion Jay Mullan (JGE) shot 80 and tied for 19th. Jay had a card that contained six treys, two sixes and an 11 on his second shot at the par-five hole — a card wrecker for Mullane.
60 players completed the first round, and 18 players shot 80.
The second round tomorrow (Sunday) will be played with the last overall leader, all off the first tee.
Kick-off times are from 7am to 10.20am, with teams from Naim, Mullane and Samawi teeing off during this period.
