A resident of a San Francisco Bay Area nursing home has died after being mistakenly offered dishwashing liquid as drinking juice.
Three residents of the Atria Park senior living facility in San Mateo, about 32 kilometers south of San Francisco, were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after drinking drinks, KRON-TV reported. We have been notified that a resident has passed away. Our sincerest condolences to the family,” Atria told the radio in a statement.
The facility has suspended employees during the investigation, and the facility is also cooperating with authorities, the statement said. Other details were not immediately released.
However, Marcia Cutchin told KRON-TV that the deceased was her mother, 93-year-old Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell. When Maxwell arrived at the hospital, “she had severe blisters in her mouth, throat and esophagus,” Kachin said.
Atria told the family that the substance was a “protein-eating alkaline cleanser,” she said.
She said her mother had dementia and was unable to feed herself.
Maxwell left behind eight children and 20 grandchildren, her daughter said.
