Dumat al-Jandal, the largest wind farm in the region, has been connected to the grid and started to produce carbon-free electricity.

According to local media reports, Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm has been connected to the grid and started to produce carbon-free electricity.

Dumat al-Jandal is the largest wind farm in the region. It consists of 99 wind turbines, each of which can generate electricity for as many as 70,000 households in the country, reported by Al Arabiya in Saudi Arabia.

This 400 megawatt (MW) utility-scale wind power project was developed by a team led by EDF Renewables and Masdar, two of the world’s leading renewable energy companies.

According to Al Arabiya, the project created more than 600 jobs during the construction phase alone.

“The outstanding commitment of our team and contractors in implementing the highest health and safety standards and the full support provided by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Energy and the Saudi Electricity Procurement Company [SPCC] Saudi Electricity Company [SEC] Olivier Marchand, project director of Dumat al-Jandal Wind Co for Energy LLC, said, “In this challenging pandemic period, he has contributed to the successful execution of the project.”

“We are now looking forward to successfully implementing the full commissioning of the project in the coming months with our partners and contractors,” Marchand added.

The farm is part of the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision, a reform project aimed at diversifying the economy and freeing Saudi Arabia from dependence on oil.

According to Gulf News, its construction began in September 2019, and the wind turbine installation project is nearing completion. After completion, the farm will reduce 988,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually to support Saudi Arabia’s climate change mitigation goals.

“Masdar is proud to use its experience in renewable energy to work with our partners to provide the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the first wind farm,” said Osama al-Othman, Masdar’s national representative.

“The successful connection of this project to the transmission grid marks an important milestone for this landmark project in the Kingdom, and we look forward to the completion of this project in the near future.”
